Languages: Chinese, English, and French

Paul Ricoeur is one of the most famous contemporary philosophers in the world.  A growing international community of scholars is now building on his lectures, writings, and ideas for elaborating hermeneutics as a philosophy both fundamental and wide-ranging in its influence.  Attention to his work is increasing in Asia as well as in Europe, America, Australia, and Africa. This conference seeks to promote an international encounter of researchers from around the world on the ongoing relevance of Ricoeur’s studies in Hermeneutics.  Because the conference will take place in Taiwan, a special goal is to generate contributions on the significance of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics for Asian thought.

Papers addressing any aspects of the contemporary import of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics, and especially its import for Asian contexts, are welcome.  To bring more focus to proposals and to conference discussion, the conference will be primarily oriented around five core panel ideas, summarized here and described in more detail below:
1. Ricoeur on Text, Discourse, and Metaphor as Paths to His Hermeneutics
2. Ricoeur on Imagination
3. Ricoeur and Religious Studies
4. Ricoeur on Hermeneutics and Legal Studies
5. Ricoeur on Political Philosophy, Politics, and Ethics
Depending on the number of proposals for each panel, the panel may extend to multiple panel sessions. While proposals in these areas are of particular interest, other proposals on Ricoeur’s work are also invited.

Guidelines for Submission of Proposal Abstracts:
1. Submission Deadline: March 7, 2014;
2. Abstracts (300-500 words) in Chinese, English, or French should be submitted to:
3. Abstracts should be submitted as a Word file.
4. The submission should include a separate first page that includes:
a) Author’s name;
b) Institutional affiliation;
c) Areas of research interests;
d) Core Panel (if any) the proposal is submitted for;
e) E-mail address;
f) Please include no form of personal identification on the abstract itself.

Abstracts will be submitted for blind review by the conference’s Organizing Committee. Decisions on the paper’s acceptance will be made by March 31, 2014.  Notification of these decisions will occur by e-mail. Final papers will need to be suitable for a 25-minute presentation.

At the end of the conference, there will be a second selection of papers.  Those considered suitable by the Organizing Committee will be published.

If you have any question, please do not hesitate to contact our organizing committee at the following address: cristalhuang.ricoeursociety@gmail.com

Core Panels

Ricoeur on Text, Discourse, and Metaphor as Paths to His Hermeneutics

This panel concentrates on Ricoeur’s reflections on discourse, text, and the world as paths into his larger hermeneutics.  The panel also examines Ricoeur’s work on metaphor as illustrative of these themes.  The panel incorporates Ricoeur’s attention to rhetoric and poetics into this appraisal of his hermeneutics.  The panel evaluates Ricoeur’s macro perspective on these concepts and attempts to extend his reflections into consideration of new possibilities for hermeneutics.  We want to develop how Ricoeur’s work may help us go beyond the limits of metaphor.  We reflect on what Ricoeur’s hermeneutic framework may help bring to the world.

Ricoeur on Imagination

Ricoeur argues that in Western philosophy, most of the discussion of imagination has focused on this theme as a matter of reproductive imagination rather than productive imagination.  Reproductive imagination is generated from the model of the image, which is a copy of reality.  Reproductive imagination is derivative from existing reality and offers nothing new or creative.  By contrast, Ricoeur wants to cultivate productive imagination as something that augments reality, brings something new into reality.  For Ricoeur the prototype of productive imagination is the fiction, which may introduce new truths into reality.

This panel will explore and extend Ricoeur’s discussion of imagination, particularly productive imagination.  Ricoeur divides productive imagination into four categories, and panelists may address the general topic of imagination or any subcategory:  poetic imagination (as in the fiction), epistemological imagination (as in theoretical models), social and political imagination (as in the utopia), and religious imagination.  Panelists may also compare Ricoeur’s approach to imagination with other approaches, whether from Western or Eastern thought.

Ricoeur and Religious Studies

As the most important Protestant and hermeneutic philosopher in contemporary France, Ricoeur’s thinking possesses not only promising potential and rich resources but also actual ideas and concrete approaches for religious studies. From The Symbolism of Evil, The Rule of Metaphor, and Time and Narrative to Thinking Biblically and Living Up to Death, etc., Ricoeur’s work offers systematic approaches to the hermeneutics of beliefs and to ontologically dialectical paths for the theology of religion. Ricoeur’s philosophizing offers a pattern, indeed, a paradigm change in religious studies. The following topics or fields could be discovered and discussed:

1. More extended exegesis of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of law, analysis of justice, or legal interpretation;
2. Development of the implications of Ricoeur’s argument, e.g., for notions of justice, legal judgment, legal practice, legal education, or legal creativity;
3. Comparison or interrelation of Ricoeur’s approach to law and legal interpretation with other aspects of his work;
4. Comparison of Ricoeur’s approach to law and legal interpretation with other views, whether from the West or East.
5. Critiques of Ricoeur’s argument;
6. Development of other themes pertinent to Ricoeur’s analysis of law, justice, and legal interpretation.

Ricoeur on Hermeneutics and Legal Studies

Ricoeur’s analysis of law, justice and legal interpretation is characteristically dense.  It has not yet received significant academic attention.  This panel encourages papers on any of the following themes in order to enrich and extend discussion of this important area of Ricoeur’s thought:

1. More extended exegesis of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of law, analysis of justice, or legal interpretation;
2. Development of the implications of Ricoeur’s argument, e.g., for notions of justice, legal judgment, legal practice, legal education, or legal creativity;
3. Comparison or interrelation of Ricoeur’s approach to law and legal interpretation with other aspects of his work;
4. Comparison of Ricoeur’s approach to law and legal interpretation with other views, whether from the West or East.
5. Critiques of Ricoeur’s argument;
6. Development of other themes pertinent to Ricoeur’s analysis of law, justice, and legal interpretation.

Ricoeur on Political Philosophy, Politics, and Ethics

This panel seeks to contribute to the growing scholarly attention to Ricoeur’s work in political philosophy.  The panel welcomes proposals that develop Ricoeur’s contributions to political philosophy, demonstrate its limitations, or seek to extend it.  The panel requests proposals on any of the following, overlapping themes:

1. Ricoeur’s discussion of specific political moments, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s;
2. Ricoeur’s discussion of evil as a political phenomenon;
3. Ricoeur’s discussion of ideology and utopia and their political implications;
4. Ricoeur’s interchanges with other political philosophers such as Eric Weil, Hannah Arendt, John Rawls, Charles Taylor, Michael Walzer, and Ronald Dworkin;
5. Ricoeur’s discussion and reinterpretation of the political notions of liberty, justice, and community;
6. The political contributions of Ricoeur’s work on ethics and phronesis;
7. The significance to political thought of Ricoeur’s work on “just institutions”;
8. The distinctiveness of Ricoeur’s pluralist-communitarian political perspective;
9. The contributions of Ricoeur’s work on recognition for the political sphere.
10. Juxtapositions between Ricoeur and Eastern work in political thought.

4. 呂格爾與其他政治哲學家的交流,例如 Eric Weil, Hannah Arendt, John             Rawls, Charles  Taylor, Michael Walzer, and Ronald Dworkin等。
